| Personal History | Born to a farmer and his wife, Millicent Price was the eldest of four children. Growing up in the village of Marnemouth-on-Ribble was a good experience for Millicent, until her father died in a plowing accident when she was 10. Millicent was forced to leave school in order to take care of her siblings while her mother found work as a Cook at the nearby Dower House. At age 14 Millicent entered service as a Laundry Maid at Thrushstone Park when the First Marquess was in control of the Estate. Her duties were always rewarding to her as a young woman, because of the visible changes from soiled to clean. This satisfaction stayed with her as she progressed to become a Housemaid at 16. Millicent saw the estate flourish as well as the household and soon became Head Housemaid given her experience with the house. She continued as Head Housemaid under the second Marquess, and worked closely with the Housekeeper at the time, Mrs. Greyson, who was nearing her 80’s and was grooming Millicent as a possibility to replace her. In 1884, following the death of the Second Marquess in Sudan, Mrs. Greyson departed service at Thrushstone Park to begin her retirement. While she settled into a cottage in nearby Marnemouth-on-Ribble, Millicent was given her keys and began her tenure as Housekeeper for the Third Marquess and his wife. |
