Personal History Louis Cameron Tennyson Battersly was born on April 14th, 1876, in the village of Marnemouth on Ribble to father Archibald, the Third Marquess, and mother Mary. He is the oldest son and heir apparent to the Marquessate. Although Louis has had a lifelong infatuation for sports, his true passion lies in military matters. From the time he learned to read, Louis began pouring over the classics of history, extracting the military lessons from them. He would read newspapers just to track unit movements, copying the tactics he’d read about with his tin soldiers.

Louis attended the local boys’ school in Marnemouth until he turned 13, at which point he tested for and gained admittance to Harrow School in London. Here, he excelled at sports (much like his father), playing on the rugby, cricket, and football teams. In addition to his normal studies, Louis continued learning about military tactics, falling under the mentorship of a retired Army officer who had become a teacher at Harrow, Colonel Nelson Woodcock.

After his graduation from Harrow School, Louis was accepted into the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst. Here, he found his form, excelling at almost everything he applied himself to. He would graduate from Sandhurst and be commissioned as a second lieutenant in the 8th Lancashire Fusiliers, 2nd Division (Infantry). The division would then see action in the Battle of Tugela Heights and again during the Relief of Ladysmith. A stray rifle bullet ended Louis’s deployment with the 2nd Division, however, and he’s been shipped back to Marnemouth on Ribble to recuperate.
